The murder charges were filed Thursday with the death of a three-year-old boy, police said he had been seriously injured by his mother’s boyfriend.
Aiden Lombardi, 3, from Coraopolis, died late Wednesday at UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Allegheny County police said the coroner determined the death to be a murder and the cause was a blunt head injury.
“He was just a happy little soul,” said Aiden’s 12-year-old aunt Sophia Cannata.
Tyler Mason, 25, from Burgetstown, was initially charged with exacerbating the assault and endangering the well-being of children after the incident on Tuesday. Allegheny County police said Mason was also charged with murder.
“My gaps in my heart will never be filled,” said Aiden’s Papa Papa Bill Cannata.
Police and rescue personnel were called to Pennsylvania Avenue in Coraopolis, where Aiden was found unresponsive. According to police, Mason’s girlfriend left her son Aiden in his care while she was doing errands.
According to court documents, the two were alone for 13 minutes when Mason told Aiden’s mother something was wrong. Witnesses told police that they had heard the child screaming, and police said Aiden was found in a bruise and doctors determined he had a broken skull.
According to criminal accusations, Mason said he was sending a message to his sister across Aiden’s room when he noticed a blood-bitten french fries near Aiden’s mouth.

“He was my favorite in the world whatever he did,” said his 15-year-old aunt Emary Cannata. “Everything he did made my day”
“He was the greatest light of my life,” said Aiden’s grandmother, Pamela Brand.
