Police in New York City have arrested a suspect who they say was caught on surveillance video attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl in the hallway of a cardiologist's office in Brooklyn.
The harrowing incident took place at 1pm on Sunday at 202 Foster Avenue in the Kensington section of Brooklyn, which is home to NYU Langone Cardiology Associates.
Early Wednesday morning, officers arrested 31-year-old David Gonzalez on charges of attempted rape, forcible touching and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
According to the NYPD, the teenager and her mother were headed to the cardiologist’s office for a medical appointment.
The girl had ridden her scooter and arrived at the office ahead of her mother, PIX11 reported. There she encountered a stranger, later identified by the police as Gonzalez, who approached the 14-year-old and exposed his privates to her.
Police said the 14-year-old tried to run away but Gonzalez grabbed and knocked her to the ground while covering her mouth, ordering her to 'shut up' and stop screaming.
The child continued fighting back and the assailant eventually let her go and ran away. The victim was not physically harmed during the attack.
Gonzalez was seen getting on a moped and speeding away along Foster Avenue toward McDonald Avenue. The New York Daily News reported that police relied on surveillance video from the area to track down Gonzalez five 5 miles to a home in Crown Heights, where he was taken into custody just after 2am on Wednesday.
The NYPD has released surveillance video and still photos documenting the incident and depicting the suspect. It is unknown if he was a patient at the cardiology practice.
Gonzalez has a criminal history that encompasses 19 prior arrests on charges including public lewdness, assault and robbery.
